The Seasonings: Added to the meat before cooking
Before we get into policy matters, I'd like to tell you about some people I've known over my life.
The policy matters when it comes down to the papers that are written, the videos about them and so forth, they're very serious. There's a lot of math in them, well, at least some of them, but the policy comes from somewhere.
The way a person thinks comes from somewhere. And if you're going to trust what I've written or decide you don't, you deserve to know a little about where that thinking came from. So I'm going to tell you some stories.
Honestly, before I even start, some of these memories are 30 years old. Some are nearly 60 years old. Some of them are even more than 60 years old. I wasn't taking notes at the time. I wouldn't swear under oath that every conversation happened the way I'm going to tell it. Or that every detail is absolutely right. Or even that the people I'm talking about would tell the story the same way.
Memory doesn't work like that. I'm a nurse, I know. And most of us know that. And so even when we don't say it, I just want you to know this is my memory and what I think of everything. What I can tell you is the lessons are accurate.
What I took from these people, what I learned from them, what they showed me, taught me and helped me feel, what changed the way I think, what I still carry. There's no doubt about any of that. If I have a detail wrong here or a detail wrong there, the lesson is still the lesson. So I'm going to tell it to you just plainly the way I teach. I teach with stories always have.
Long before this campaign. I used to sit down and sing folk songs that meant you had to tell stories and in nursing when I'm trying to teach a patient. Or when I was teaching in a classroom. Or even at a kitchen table or a dining table teaching my own kids. Stories are what makes principles something you can almost feel. It helps you take the principle to heart helps you really integrate it into yourself. And that's what all of these pieces about these people are.
These are stories about people none of you will likely ever meet, but who helped me learn how to think. And I I tell them the way I remember. And honestly, that's the best I can do. But it's all in service of one thing to try to help.
People watching this and reading the things that I've written. Understand the person who wants to earn their trust.
Just seem like a fair thing to say before we get started.
